Message from the Masjid Bilal Executive Committee

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

As we completed our first day of fasting on Wednesday, we officially stepped across the threshold of this blessed month. We aren't just beginning a fast of the stomach; we are beginning a fast of the heart.

Allah (SWT) tells us in the Quran: “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting... that you may achieve taqwa (become mindful of Allah)” (2:183). But let us be clear: Taqwa (mindfulness) is not just a private matter between you and your prayer mat. It is a living, breathing reality that manifests in our akhlaq—our character.

The Masjid as a Laboratory

In this Masjid—with our large crowds and shared meals—we are in a spiritual laboratory. Every one of us will be tested on two specific traits this month:

  • Consideration: The akhlaq of the proactive. It is the Sunnah of being mindful of your footprint and your impact on Allah’s creation.

  • Compassion: The akhlaq of the witness. When you see someone struggling or failing in their manners, do you react with arrogance or with the mercy of the Prophet (PBUH)?

The Challenge

A fast that does not improve our treatment of one another is a hollow fast. Let us be the reason someone else finds peace in this masjid, not the reason they feel pushed away.

Essential Community Announcements

To ensure our "laboratory of character" runs smoothly for everyone, please take note of these vital updates:

  • Financial Support: Our general funds are currently low. We humbly ask for your generosity to help keep the masjid running during this high-capacity month. Please donate in person or through our website by clicking here.

  • Parking: Space is extremely scarce. Please arrive early, carpool, and ensure you are not blocking other cars or emergency exits.

  • Children & Safety: We love our youth! Parents, please supervise children closely to ensure their safety.

  • Donations: For in-kind items, please consult an Executive Committee (EC) member before dropping them off.

  • Iftar Calendar: Join us for community iftars every weekend and check out the calendar and sign up to sponsor iftar.

May Allah allow our fasts to soften our hearts, and may He grant us the success to pass the test of character this month. Ramadan Mubarak to you and your families!

Qiyam-ul-Layl

Qiyam-ul-Layl for the last ten nights will start at 4:30 AM from tonight (March 10). Suhoor will be potluck style. May Allah accept all our worship and allow us to reach Laylatul Qadr!

Zakat-ul-Fitr

Zakat-ul-Fitr is a charitable donation of food that must be given before Eid prayer, before the end of the month of Ramadan, for the love of Allah. Zakat-ul-Fitr is compulsory upon every self-supporting adult Muslim who has food in excess of their needs, on behalf of themselves and their dependents.

The head of the household is responsible for paying the amount due, which is $12 for each member of the family. Zakat-ul-Fitr must be paid before Eid prayer. Scan the QR code or click here to pay.

Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordained Zakat ul Fitr [Fitrana] to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer; but it is a mere Sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.” [Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]
